Neck Pain FAQs

The professional you need to seek for relief of neck pain is your chiropractor. Chiropractic care relieves the symptoms of neck pain, but your chiropractor also treats the root cause of your pain, so that you can fully recover. Here are some important things your chiropractor at Back in Balance Wellness Center in Bangor and Ellsworth wants you to know.

.

The cause of neck pain is often an injury you don't even remember.

Chiropractors see people with neck pain every day. When we interview our patients, we often discover that there was some event that seemed like not such a big deal at the time that turns out to be the cause of months or even years of neck pain. Subtle injuries result in a snowball effect that causes tiny injuries to become a big problem.

What kinds of subtle injuries can result in neck pain?

One of the most common causes of neck pain is whiplash from even minor auto accidents. Coming to a complete stop from even 2 miles per hour can cause microscopic tears in the muscles of the neck. The same sort of thing can happen after a tackle or a collision on the playing field or a slip or a fall on icy pavement.

How do tiny injuries to the neck cause neck pain?

Your neck muscles are directly attached to the vertebrae of your cervical spine. When your immune system finally gets around to removing the damaged tissue in your neck muscles with a process of inflammation and swelling, your neck muscles can pull the vertebrae of your cervical spine out of alignment. This can cause you to hold your neck to one side or the other, putting strain on muscles that go up to your forehead along the sides of your face. This can also cause the "facets" of the vertebrae in your cervical spine to be pulled out of alignment so they put pressure on nerves that go down to your shoulders and arms or up to your chin. In this way, neck pain can easily turn into a headache, jaw pain, shoulder pain, or pain in your arms.

What can your chiropractor do about neck pain?

Most cases of neck pain require spinal manipulation to put your spine back into its appropriate alignment once again. Your chiropractor also has a number of drug-free tools for relieving pain and helping you get better and stay better.
