Whiplash Treatment With Chiropractic Care
Back In Balance Wellness Center has a team of chiropractors who deliver safe whiplash treatment to patients at our Ellsworth and Bangor locations. Treatment focuses on alleviating acute or chronic neck pain and other symptoms resulting from musculoskeletal damage in the neck. We usually encourage patients seeking chiropractic care for whiplash to do so right away to prevent complications such as loss of mobility.
What is Whiplash?
Whiplash injury is a common but severe type of neck strain (or neck sprain) treated by a chiropractor. The injury results from a sudden extension (forward) and flexion (backward) movement of the neck. The action is so violent that it overstretches and tears the muscles or tendons, strains the ligaments, dislocates the cervical joints, or herniates the disc. According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), whiplash affects about two-thirds of people involved in auto accidents. However, falls, physical abuse, sports accidents, and work accidents can result in this type of neck strain.
Neck Pain and Other Whiplash Symptoms
Symptoms can be physical or psychological in nature and may include:
- Dull to severe pain in the neck
- Neck stiffness or spasms
- Pain spreads to the shoulder, upper back, or arm
- Arm numbness or tingling due to pressure on a spinal nerve
- Headaches that start at the base of the skull
- Trouble sleeping, anxiety, fatigue, or other mental signs of trauma
Treatment by a Whiplash Chiropractor in Ellsworth and Bangor
Whiplash symptoms sometimes delay for hours, days, or weeks despite the underlying injury. Instead of waiting, you can visit us right away for an evaluation by our Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). We will do a physical exam, a neck x-ray, and other advanced testing to diagnose both visible and non-apparent injuries.
Your drug-free chiropractic care plan may feature spinal adjustments and non-invasive therapies to heal the connective tissues and get your body back in balance. Spinal adjustment is performed by hand or using a hand-held instrument to reposition the cervical spine and the rest of the spinal column if necessary. Doing so helps relieve pain as well as increase spine mobility and range of motion. Adjustments also relieve headaches, reduce inflammation, and eliminate radiculopathy. Our DC may also recommend:
- Massage therapy: Done before or after spinal manipulation to increase blood circulation and help the muscles and tendons heal faster
- Corrective exercises: To improve the strength and flexibility of the spine and tissue
- Lifestyle changes: Such as diet changes, stress management, and practicing proper posture to maintain neck health
